Military and commercial aviation usually hog the spotlight at the biennial Singapore Airshow, Asia’s largest aerospace and defense exhibition. But the strong showing of business aircraft at the event’s 2018 edition at Changi Airport’s Changi Exhibition Center, February 6 – 11, managed to steal some of the thunder from even the daily aerobatic performances by demonstration teams from regional Air Forces.

China’s Reignwood Aviation announced at the show a 50-shipmore than a dozen aircraft from all the major business aircraft manufacturers – Bombardier Business Aircraft, Dassault Aviation, Embraer Executive Jets, Gulfstream Aerospace and Textron (Beechcraft, Cessna, Bell) - were on static display, several making regional debuts: Gulfstream’s G500 and G600, both on track for entry into service this year, and Cessna’s Citation Longitude, also slated for 2018 certification, were in the AsiaPacific region for the first time, as was Piper Aircraft Company’s flagship M600 single engine turboprop. (Piper, however, based the M600 at Singapore’s Seletar Airport to simplify demo flights during the gathering, so technically it wasn’t at the airshow.)

The Hondajet, with its patented over-the-wing engine mounts (OTWEM) made its Singapore debut - this on the heels of the U.S. company establishing its first dealership in China. Meanwhile Bombardier brought a Global 6000 outfitted with the new Premier interior - the enhanced standard cabin design for its Global family – shown in the region for the first time.

At Gulfstream’s display, president Mark Burns proclaimed the U.S. company “excited to have the G500 and G600 in Asia, so customers can explore their exquisite interiors, unparalleled comfort and superior craftsmanship.”

The G500 is entering the final state of its certification program, while the G600 recently completed field performance testing, and Gulfstream has announced performance enhancements for both aircraft. They include a range increase in the G500 to 5,200 nautical miles (nm)/9,630 kilometers (km), while the G600’s range has been upped to 6,500 nm/12,038 km. Each has a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.925. Gulfstream also displayed its flagship G650ER along with a G550 and G280.

“Customers based in the Asia-pacific region require aircraft that have the range, speed and payload capability to travel easily between world business centers,” said Burns, calling each of Gulfstream’s models “the top of its class.”

More than 330 Gulfstream are in service in the Asia-pacific region, the majority of them (280) its signature large cabin jets. The company supports the fleet with its Gulfstream Beijing service center; two factory authorized service centers; and four Gulfstream-authorized warranty facilities in the region.

Piper Aircraft Company announced an order from its China dealer, Fanmei Aviation Technologies (FAT), for 100 Archer TX single-engine trainers, 50 twin-engine Seminoles, one Seneca and one Piper M350 – a total of 152 aircraft - representing the largest individual trainer order in the manufacturer’s history.

“The agreement and cooperation with Piper Aircraft is the key element for our general aviation roadmap,” said Don Li, president of FAT, a subsidiary of Sichuan Fanmei Education Group. Meanwhile the M600 was kept busy with demo flights, according to Piper, at this, the first stop on a planned tour of Pacific Rim countries including Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines. Ron Gunnarson, Piper’s vice president of sales, marketing and customer support, called the six-seat M600 “ideally suited to the Pacific Rim region, given its performance, range and comfortable cabin,” able to reach destinations including Hong Kong, Manila, and Northwest Australia from Singapore “at a fraction of typical operating costs and over $1M less than its closest competitor.”

Bell announced a purchase by Vietnam Helicopter Corporation (VHC) and its subsidiary Northern Vietnam Helicopter Company (VNH North) for two Bell 505 Jet Ranger X helicopters, representing Bell’s first commercial sale within that country. The clean sheet Bell 505 model entered service last year.

With business aircraft now taking their place alongside the jet fighters and airliners, the 2020 Singapore airshow, February 11 – 16, promises to be a must-attend event for the entire aviation industry.
