For speed, capability, cabin space, and a smooth ride, the Leonardo AW139 surpasses all other helicopters in the intermediate twin-engine sector. Produced principally by Agustawestland, the 15-seat medium-sized twin-engined chopper can play a variety of different roles, including VIP/ corporate transport, offshore transport, law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, emergency medical service, disaster relief, and maritime patrol. As well as Agustawestland’s own manufacturing facilities in Italy and the United States, the AW139 is produced in Russia by Helivert – a joint venture between Agustawestland and Russian Helicopters.
The new US$14 million medium-sized twin is bigger and more powerful than an S-76, and smaller and less expensive than an S-92. Better still, with a cruising speed of 165 knots, it’s faster than both of them. Thanks to its highly automated cockpit, the AW139 can be flown by a single pilot. A new rotor-blade ice-protection system enables IFR operations in some of the worst weather conditions, and is available as an add-on option to older aircraft as well.
