New business jet debuts, a solid industry rebound and transformative technologies were among the starring elements at the National Business Aviation Association’s (NBAA’S) annual Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (BACE) in Orlando in October. Fittingly for an event that embraces the global business aviation community, products from two Chinese companies – Cirrus Aircraft and Terrafugia – were highlighted at the U.S. gathering’s opening general session, with a mockup of the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet and D2, Terrafugia’s prototype flying car, flanking the sides of the stage.

“This year the Cirrus Vision Jet won the Collier trophy,” said NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen in welcoming attendees, reminding them of the honor, which recognizes aviation’s most outstanding achievement of the past year. He added, “The flying car Terrafugia provided us today sets the stage as we think about future.”

During the gathering D2, which has accumulated more than 200 test flight hours, was featured at the exhibition’s indoor static aircraft display, while a Vision Jet was presented at the main aircraft display at Orlando Executive Airport.

All told more than 100 business aircraft were displayed at NBAA-BACE, including the debut of the new Praetor 500 and 600 from Brazil’s Embraer Executive Jets. The Praetors (the name is taken from the title for a Roman magistrate) are updated versions of Embraer’s Legacy line, made famous in the AsiaPacific region by brand ambassador Jackie Chan. Expected to enter service in 2019, both new Praetor models sport a new “Bossa Nova” interior and cabin appointments including an upper tech panel, reinvented diamond stitching on the seats, and carbon fiber finishing. The Legacy 450 and 500 will remain in production.

France’s Dassault Aviation announced its in-development 6X long-range jet is on track for first delivery in 2022, and

the company is nearing a decision on which Pratt & Whitney Canada engine will power the aircraft. The 6X is the follow-on to the cancelled Falcon 5X, scuttled by delays in developing the Snecma Silvercrest turbines selected for that program. Dassault also revealed another jet is on the way - it’s preparing for “a new program launch.”

Boeing Business Jets announced delivery of the first BBJ Max 8, the executive version of its next generation 737 Max 8 airliner, which boosts fuel efficiency some 15 percent thanks to its GE LEAP engines and improved winglets. The first BBJ Max 8’s interior completion will be performed at Comlux Completion, U.S. completion facility of Switzerland-based executive airliner services specialist Comlux the Aviation Group. BBJ also unveiled a new interior design concept for the Max, called Genesis, featuring sweeping curves and generous open space, developed in partnership with Argentinian design firm Skystyle.

Hondajet, U.S. division of the Japan’s Honda Motor Company, introduced a $250,000 upgrade package for early model HA-420 Hondajets, which boosts payload 100 lbs. and range more than 100 nm, decreases takeoff distances some 12 percent, and upgrades the panel to Garmin’s G3000 avionics suite, among other enhancements.

Some of these new and upgraded aircraft are likely to be based in the Asia-pacific region.

Honeywell Aerospace released at NBAA-BACE its annual 10-year business jet delivery forecast. Operators in the AsiaPacific region indicate they plan to replace and/or bolster their fleets about 12 percent with new aircraft from now through 2023, accounting for 7 percent of global new jet demand over the period. Honeywell forecasts a total of 7,700 new business jet deliveries globally from 2019 through 2028, two percent more than predicted in last year’s report.

Also highlighted at the event was the successful campaign led by the NBAA to defeat airline efforts to privatize and take control of the U.S. Air Traffic Control System.

“NBAA-BACE exceeded even the highest expectations,” declared Bolen at its conclusion, expressing optimism the industry as a whole will follow suit. “The convention showed that this is one of the best environments for business aviation in decades.”

NBAA-BACE 2019 takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada Oct. 22–24.

ALSO HIGHLIGHTED AT THE EVENT WAS THE SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LED BY THE NBAA TO DEFEAT AIRLINE EFFORTS TO PRIVATIZE AND TAKE CONTROL OF THE U.S. AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM.
