Gate 4 Jiuxianqiao Lu / Chaoyang /大山子藝術區/酒仙橋路4號門 German-designed, Soviet-funded, ex-factory compound hotbed of contemporary commercial art, and a good place to glimpse Beijing’s creative youth culture (avoid Mon). Tie in with a visit to Caochangdi (see over) + Green T House Living (see Rest/glam).
Take a taxi through the main No. 4 gate (marked by a big red 798) and stop at the caged red dinosaurs, created by one of the district’s resident artists, Sui Jianguo. On your left is Timezone 8 / 5978 9917 / bar and sushi shack, and across is the ace Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (see Art) and attached design shop. Exit the gallery left towards the main gate, then go right at 798 Middle First St. 50m ahead on the left is Chinese stalwart Long March Space / 5978 9768, followed by Yin Shu + EA West (see Jewellery), after which you’ll meet 797 Rd. Zip left and spy Fei Space (see Adv. Shop.) opp.; underneath is Dulton / 5978 4828 / flogging retro-mod home furny and decor. Exit left and nip into Chairman / B01-1 / 5762 3030 / packing Tibetan rugs, then enter Originality Plaza through a red brick arch on the left. At the right cnr of the square are NY heavyweight Pace / 5978 9781 / and Danish Faurschou / 5978 9316, both repping established Chinese and int’l artists, then cross for North Korean art at Mansudae DPR Gallery / 6736 0289. Sashay out left then right at the next junction. Past the red phone box, another right takes you back to 797 Rd. Dive down the next left to 798 Middle Second St. and on the cnr is ACF / 5978 9945 / acf-design.com / for top local designer furny. Now the first right ahead reveals Italian biggie Galleria Continua / 5978 9505 / and Tang Contemporary Art / 5978 9610 / both representing today’s stars. Retrace to 797 Rd, swing right and right again at the cnr with White Box / 5978 4802. Note Taipei’s Asia Art Center / 5978 9709 / is on your left; Magician Space / 5840 5117 / on the right, and a heap of China-based galleries incl. the stellar SZ Art Center / 5978 9213.
