Abstract: Taking a chemical tanker built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. as example and assuming its route between Rotterdam in Europe and New York in USA with reasonable operation and waiting time, this paper analyzes in detail the operation of the tanker in and out of the Emission Control Area (ECA) as well as the operation condition of main engine, power generator, boiler and other equipment to determine the fuel consumption under different conditions. Meanwhile, it analyzes and compares the recent trends of global fuel prices to know the price difference between Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and Marine Gas Oil (MGO), and thus to find out the cost increased by MGO used in ECA. On this basis, a comprehensive analysis is carried out on the cost increased by MGO, initial investment of scrubber system and operational cost to estimate roughly the additional cost caused by scrubber and its payback period, and thus to study and discuss if it is economically competitive to install the scrubber on chemical tankers.
