New Airport Takes Off
March 1, 2018
Beijing’s new international airport, located 46 kilometers south of downtown Beijing, will start trial operations in October 2019. The airport, designed to relieve pressure from the overcrowded Beijing Capital International Airport, is expected to handle 620,000 flights, 100 million passengers and four million tons of cargo annually. The airport’s terminal buildings cover a space of 313,000 square meters, featuring a centerpiece and five arms like a phoenix extending its wings. The airport will become an integrated transportation hub that comprises high-speed trains, expressways and rail transit systems, and will play a pivotal role in accelerating the economic growth of Beijing, Tianjin and the Xiongan New Area. It is one of China’s mega engineering projects that represent the country’s unique wisdom in architecture, design and craftsmanship. Newschina reporters have gained an inside account of the airport’s role, location, design concepts and construction challenges after interviews with urban design officials, chief designers of the airport and senior policy-makers.
