Poll the People

It is a Chinese custom for wedding guests to offer a red envelope containing cash, known as a hongbao, to new couples at their weddings. People are now starting to challenge the custom as it has become a heavy burden, on young people in particular. Many complain that the custom is making the relationship between friends too materialistic and it is being used to make money. Others say it is still an important way to show good wishes for the new couple and that people should pay according to their means, and not what other people say.
