Ren Xiaoyue and A Ding, a couple in rural Lishui, Yunnan Province, became so popular for their heartwarming videos about their daily life that State media Central China Television Station (CCTV) invited them to appear on a program. The couple has nearly 8.5 million followers on Douyin (China’s Tiktok), who check in regularly for posts about their loving relationship. Ren moved with her boyfriend A Ding from the city back to his village, despite her family’s objections. Although not outwardly romantic, A Ding expresses his love for Ren through little gestures like cooking for her every day, helping wash her hair and bringing her small gifts after a day of selling vegetables at the market. In one video, aware that Ren was homesick and missing her mother, A Ding secretly brought her mom back for a surprise visit. Ren helps A Ding around their small farm and with housework. Many followers commented they struggle to find such a relationship in today’s materialistic society, to which Ren and A Ding respond that true love takes acceptance, tolerance and reciprocation. Although some netizens have criticized the videos for their scripted feel, the positive response reveals there are still many young romantics out there looking to settle down with that special someone. Many netizens called Ren the happiest woman on the internet. Following their CCTV appearance, Ren posted a new video showing how she and A Ding struggled to be together at first, and revealed that they have since gotten engaged.
