Crack down on illegal food practice

-

The police handled 136 food safety cases, catching 334 suspects and 44 people were punished.

Producing counterfeit food or poor-quality food with expired materials was one of the major violations.

Four bakeries, run by bakery chain Farine, in Xuhui and Huangpu districts and the Pudong New Area, were closed because of an expired flour scandal last year.

Using illegal additives or additive abuse still exists. Officials found some eateries put poppy shells into soup or hotpot, while illegal use of chemicals in health tonics were also detected, imposing serious health risks to customers.

With the development of the Internet and quick logistics, the government also found an increase of trans-provincial crimes, which are more difficult to detect.

To step up monitoring and inspection on food safety risks, Shanghai FDA has established 750 regular monitoring centers, and some temporary monitoring centers to collect samples and undertake food inspections.

Almost all food risks are covered, as the centers have monitored 14,145 samples of food.

The risk monitoring can reflect safety conditions of local food and detect problems and risks in time, providing important evidence for local food safety inspection and management.
