El­derly man pun­ished for stop­ping the traffic

AN 87-year-old man is in trou­ble for flag­ging down a bus on the street be­tween stops and try­ing to get on board.

Po­lice said the in­ci­dent took place on Changde Road at Zhao­ji­aqiao Road in the Jing’an Tem­ple area at 2pm last Satur­day.

Videos shot by passers-by and put on­line showed the man, who was walk­ing with a stick, block­ing the path of a No. 37 bus.

He re­fused to move de­spite a num­ber of pedes­tri­ans ask­ing him to get out of the road.

Po­lice soon ar­rived and traffic flow was re­stored af­ter it had been dis­rupted for around 10 min­utes.

They said the man, iden­ti­fied as Wu, had been pun­ished for dis­turb­ing pub­lic or­der, but de­clined to say what kind of pun­ish­ment.

Sim­i­lar of­fenses merit up to 10 days in de­ten­tion, but peo­ple over 70 years of age are ex­empt from de­ten­tion.

Mean­while, in Hongkou District, a 63-year-old bus pas­sen­ger was detained af­ter jostling the driver and caus­ing the bus to hit a street clean­ing ve­hi­cle last Sun­day.

The in­ci­dent took place on Ouyang Road at Xiangde Road at noon, po­lice said.

The pas­sen­ger had an ar­gu­ment with the driver and then at­tacked him, caus­ing the col­li­sion, po­lice said.

No one was in­jured in the in­ci­dent.

The pas­sen­ger could face a crim­i­nal charge of en­dan­ger­ing pub­lic safety, po­lice said.
