Japanese sensation to perform in city

JAPANESE musician, singer-songwriter, record producer and illustrator Kenshi Yonezu will be in Shanghai for a concert “When The Spine Becomes Opal.”

One of the most popular songs of the 1991born Yonezu is his 2018 hit “Lemon,” which is also the theme song of the hit TV series “Unnatural” and has been viewed nearly 3 million times on YouTube.

Yonezu and his friend Hiroshi Nakajima formed a band “Late Rabbit Edda” in 2006, in which he worked as a vocalist, songwriter and occasional guitarist.

Twenty-four songs composed by Yonezu were uploaded to a video sharing website Nico Nico Douga between April 2008 and March 2009, under the name Hachi.

After high school, the young talent moved to Osaka and began to study in a fine arts school. He started uploading songs using Vocaloid, a singing voice synthesizer software, which made his songs become increasingly popular online.

“Musunde Hiraite Rasetsu to Mukuro” ( Hold, Release; Rakshasa And Carcasses), which was released in 2009 was Yonezu’s first song to receive over 1 million views on the site.

Yonezu released two self-produced albums in 2010: “Hanataba to Suiso” (Bouquets and Water Burials) in February, and “Official Orange” in November.

Yonezu writes and composes all his music. In his Vocaloid songs, as well as his independent album “Diorama,” he arranged, programed, mixed and performed all the instruments himself.
