Open workshop to wow theatergoers

- Zhu Ying

A special exhibition titled “Relic Sensual Theater,” which coincides with the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center’s opening season — “Hole to Another Universe,” will run until October 27.

Combining digital visual arts and interactive sound installations, it is also the inauguration exhibition at the theater gallery, which is on the seventh floor of the newly renovated Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center.

Established by visual artist Zhou Fan, sound artist Bao Erjin, new media artist Liu Wei and curator Yang Ge, the gallery advocates the concept of “open workshop.”

“I adopted the principle of symmetry to this design,” Zhou said. “Extracting, arranging, disassembling and reconstructing, this is the way of creating. Every series features a distinctive color system and represents different materials and species.”

Following the theme of the theater’s opening season, the theater has created a fashion brand of the same name.

There are a series of creative products, such as Muse rings, 3D models of the 18-floor building, gloves, postcards and fridge magnets.

Besides, a permanent show featuring the development of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center on the sixth floor is open, free of charge, to the public.

Old props, costumes, models of stage design and photos will bring visitors back to the theater’s classic plays.
