Student beats Disney resort in food fight

- Ke Jiayun

THE Shanghai Disney Resort agreed to pay 50 yuan (US$7) to a female college student who sued it for banning her from bringing food into the theme park following a mediation by the Pudong New Area People’s Court yesterday.

Student Wang Jieying carried some instant food with her when she went to the Shanghai Disney Resort on January 30 this year, the court said.

During the security check, she was told that visitors couldn’t take food into the park. She tried to argue with the workers but failed, and she had to throw the food away.

On March 15, Wang filed a lawsuit against the resort and asked the Pudong New Area People’s Court to confirm that the rules set by the resort on prohibiting visitors to carry food, alcohol and non-alcoholic beverage of more than 600 millimeters to the park are invalid.

She also demanded compensation for the food she was forced to drop — worth 46.30 yuan.

The court held a hearing on April 23. It also organized several mediations for both sides.

During this period, however, the Shanghai Disney Resort changed its policy to allow visitors to bring food and beverages, except for such foods as instant noodles which require hot water, food kept in containers with reheating capabilities and smelly food, including durian and choudoufu, or fermented bean curd.
