Annual handicraft expo will be abuzz in November

- Xu Wei

THE 6th Shanghai International Hobby and Craft Expo will take place at the Shanghai Expo Exhibition Center on November 27-29.

With the theme “Bee Together, Bee Happy,” the Expo is collecting creative handicraft designs with “bee” elements. Organizers hope to inspire visitors with bee’s unique qualities, such as diligence and team work. Submitted handicrafts may be made of any kind of material, including fabrics, paper, wood, leather and pottery.

To date, handicrafts from all over China have been submitted.

Liu Fengchen, a local inheritor of the Liu Family willow-weaving art, created an exquisite bee handicraft with brightly-dyed willow twigs that combines fashion with traditional techniques. Liu said he started learning the craft from his family’s seniors as a teenage apprentice.

Li Jinchun, an enthusiast from Yunnan Province, transformed old family materials into a bee. The bee’s body is made of colorful paper while the wings are made of plastic waste.

“My affinity with the Expo started in 2017 when I visited it out of interest and curiosity,” said Li. “It was a rewarding and unforgettable experience. To me, the Expo opens the door to a world of handicrafts for everyone.”

Wu Jingfang is a 76-year-old retired art teacher. She presented a lovely bee artwork made of golden iron wires. Zhai Linyan is a nine-year-old child from Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province. It took him four days to make a beautiful paper-quill artwork of four working bees.

The deadline for submission is June 15. Handicrafters can send ideas and pictures of their creations to yangcnsh@yesby.me. They can also call 021-62942503 for more details.

Launched in 2015, the annual Expo has attracted domestic and foreign exhibitors to display their latest products, techniques and ideas.

Many of the exhibits demonstrate both time-honored traditional craftsmanship and innovative, modern techniques.
