Eleven landscaping sculptures with different themes are displayed along Puxing, Lianhang and Luheng roads in Pujin Subdistrict, utilizing different plants, colors and shapes. The sculptures demonstrate the area’s cultural heritage of “Shanghai proverbs” as well as promoting the concept of man and nature living harmoniously.

THE services center for the elderly in Jiangchuan Subdistrict is doing more brisk business of late, largely due to cold weather.

The shower room, which opened on a trial basis last July, has had a flood of users. It is equipped with heaters and antislip chairs for senior citizens.

A resident surnamed Feng, who is in his 70s, said he and his wife have trouble taking showers at home because there is ongoing renovation at their apartment complex and heating is inadequate. The couple has been forced at times to go to a hotel to take showers.

“The hotel is far away and costs quite a bit,” Feng said. “Now the problem has been solved, with just a five-minute walk away. I’m really pleased.”

The shower room is opened twice a day. Reservations are required, but there is no fee during pilot operations. Once the facility is officially operational, residents will be charged 5 yuan (77 US cents) for a shower, up to 30 yuan for those needing professional assistance.

“Apart from the shower service, our meal and day-care services are also popular,” said Xu Dehong, a director of the center.

In the future, the center plans to send carers to go into homes to bathe people who can’t make it to the facility.

“We want to provide a full continuum of services to our elderly as close to their homes as possible,” said a worker at Jiangchuan’s community management office.
