Garden of Zhang Daqian

-

The ongoing exhibition features a group of photographs by Hu Chongxian (1912-1989) with inscriptions by the painter Zhang Daqian (1899-1983). Hu deliberately left a blank space on each picture for Zhang to inscribe a little poem with his running cursive calligraphy directly on the photo. With Zhang’s inscriptions on every single photo, the two artists were of one mind, connected through a shared aesthetic conception of Chinese literati painting that emphasized poetry, calligraphy and painting in a new medium.

‘Morning Market’

It is Chinese painter Chen Fei’s solo exhibition, featuring still life paintings of fruit, dumplings, vegetables and old junk on a desk, to create a panorama of local life by drawing on worldly realities. The exhibition could be seen as the visualization of the painter’s efforts in collecting, sorting and summarizing objects. Each painting tells a humours idea of a lively market full of images, inviting the viewers to enter a kaleidoscopic and folded world behind the still lives.

‘A Vast History’

The solo exhibition by Yin Zhaoyang features nearly 40 of his works, varying from oil on canvas, ink on paper, prints to sculptures. Yin uses the images of mountains, rocks, trees and living creatures to create a vast picture of human history. In many of his works, you can feel he’s been in a constant fight between a Western perception of the world and an Oriental philosophy of expression — trying to achieve harmony.

FORMER West Ham United and Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder has died aged 65 after a long struggle with a brain tumor. Roeder was first diagnosed with the tumor in 2003 while in charge of West Ham, who he led to an impressive seventh-placed finish in the English Premier League just a year earlier. He had to undergo surgery and a period of recovery before returning to the Hammers after they were relegated to the Championship later that year. Roeder was sacked early in the next season and didn’t manage again until 2006 when he took over at Newcastle after a spell as the club’s youth-team boss. He resigned in 2007 and went on to manage Norwich City for two years before his last role in the game as a managerial adviser with Stevenage in 2016. Roeder also worked as a coach under Glenn Hoddle with England.
