THE BANDRA KURLA COMPLEX,

commonly referred to as BKC, is a quickly emerging financial district in Mumbai. It takes its name from Bandra and Kurla, the two neighbourhoods to the east and west.

While Mumbai’s downtown Nariman Point used to be the city’s prominent business district, much of that commercial activity has shifted and continues to shift to BKC as it rapidly develops.

BKC now houses major companies such as Amazon, Google and Bank of India. It is also home to India’s National Stock Exchange. Other facilities at BKC include a large cricket ground and a host of five-star hotels. BKC recently ranked as the fifth most expensive office market in Asia-Pacific in a report by property consultant Knight Frank, with one square metre of space costing about US$80 to rent each month.

The focal point of the area’s development is now the International Financial Services Centre, a 50-hectare financial hub that authorities aim to build as a car-free zone. There’s still a way to go with transportation: while a metro line that reaches BKC is under construction, it will not be operational until 2021 at the earliest. For now, the district suffers from heavy traffic jams.
