SilkRoad - - EDITOR’S LETTER 編者的話 - Mark Tjhung, Editor編輯

TSIM SHA TSUI holds a special place in my heart. My first memories of Hong Kong are actually of this little tip of Kowloon, where seemingly all of the city’s quintessential experiences were packed into a tiny grid of streets. Thirty years ago, the romance of the Star Ferry, the glowing skyline, the lights of Harbour City and Canton Road, and the excitement around the then-futuristiclooking Cultural Centre made TST feel like the place to be.

But since then, not much changed. The excitement and gloss faded, replaced by a feeling that the district was quietly watching across the harbour as the rest of Hong Kong transformed.

2019 is when all of that changes. New landmarks, hotels, megacomplexes and theatres are coming to the district this year, all of which you can read about on p38. This is the year of Tsim Sha Tsui.

It’s not just TST that’s on our minds. In fact, we’ve wrapped up a whole world of destinations for you to add to your travel plans in 2019. With our flowchart on p20, you’ll find our selection of places to visit this year, whatever your interests. We also head to Halong Bay’s lesser-known sister, Bai Tu Long Bay (p58), browse Shanghai’s new breed of arty markets (p52), look at the future of heritage in Yangon (p46) and find refreshed romance in the English garden experience (p64).

It’s January: time to start planning your year in holidays.
