Speed up jabs approval for young children

-

I am a father of four sons. My two older sons, aged 17 and 13, are both fully vaccinated with BioNTech.

Our two younger sons, both aged nine, are still waiting for the BioNTech vaccine to be approved for them as the Omicron outbreak begins in Hong Kong.

A University of Hong Kong (HKU) study showed two doses of the approved alternative, Sinovac, were ineffective against the new variant.

Your report “New untraceable case has city behind in Omicron race” (January 10) quoted Professor Gabriel Leung, the dean of HKU’s faculty of medicine, as saying the “irresponsible” distributor of the BioNTech vaccine, Fosun Pharma, had not applied to lower the age limit.

I urge the Hong Kong government to use all its resources to convince Fosun Pharma to live up to its social responsibilities and help promote speedy approval of the vaccine so Hong Kong’s young children can also be protected from the risks of Covid-19.
