HK set to showcase ‘incredible’ T20 event

Feast of cricket in the city for Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup next month

Hong Kong will host next month’s Women’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground.

The Asian Cricket Council tournament will play out over June 10-21, pitting national “A” teams from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand against national teams from Hong Kong, Malaysia and the UAE, competing across two groups.

The top 2 teams from each group will progress to the semifinals, which will be held on June 19, with the final two days later.

“The Asian Cricket Council’s vision for cricket in the region includes creating equal opportunit­ies for women to showcase their talent and take the sport to new heights,” ACC president Jay Shah said.

“The Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2023 in Hong Kong is a great platform for young women cricketers to compete and grow, and we are committed to developing women’s cricket in Asia to ensure a bright future for the sport.”

Group A is made up of Hong Kong, India A, Pakistan A and Thailand A while Group B comprises Bangladesh A, Malaysia, Sri Lanka A and UAE.

Hong Kong will open their tournament against India A on June 13, before playing Pakistan A two days later and Thailand A on June 17.

Cricket Hong Kong (CHK) said it was “delighted and honoured” to be selected by the ACC to host the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup.

“It is an incredible event that will not only showcase one of the best teams in women’s cricket in Asia but will also provide a platform for the developmen­t of women’s cricket across the region,” CHK chief Burji Shroff said.

“It will provide a great playing opportunit­y and exposure to our team who will take on India A, Pakistan A and Thailand A in group matches.

“Hong Kong has a successful history in hosting internatio­nal cricket events and we look forward to welcoming visiting teams to Hong Kong to experience this wonderful city and showcase their skill in what will be a great event.”

The tournament will be subsidised by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau’s Arts and Sport Developmen­t fund, and supported by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

The event will be broadcast globally by IPG Group.
