The Nutcracker Christmas Benefit returns with festive dining, performances and other activities to raise funds for the Hong Kong Ballet

The Hong Kong Ballet’s annual production of the Tchaikovsky classic The Nutcracker has become a cornerstone of the festive season—and for good reason. Besides stunning choreography, the performance transforms the stage into a winter wonderland with beautiful sets and costumes. It’s no wonder, then, that the production also lends its name to the Hong Kong Ballet Guild’s annual holiday fundraising event.

With the aim of promoting appreciation of ballet, the guild runs various events throughout the year. For the past 10 years, the guild has put on the Nutcracker Christmas Benefit, a festive event to raise funds for the dance company. Part of these proceeds go directly to the Company’s Dancers’ Sponsorship, providing dancers with training, resources, enriching experiences and much more.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Hong Kong Ballet and the 35th edition of the annual fundraiser. Organising committee co-chairs Connie Wei Yang, Liana Yung Yeung and 500 Lister Colleen Fung, with the support of a star-studded list of sponsors, have created an event where guests of all ages can look forward to a delicious spread as well as epic entertainment—from Christmas-themed booths and activities to performances. Guests can show additional support for the arts by participating in auctions and other on-site activities.

The highlight of the benefit is a Nutcracker performance where children from ages 1 to 13—dressed in sparkling costumes—share the stage with the Hong Kong Ballet’s professional dancers. Last year’s show saw 47 children of committee members showcasing their best dance moves while decked out in miniature versions of Nutcracker costumes.

The three key fundraising events of the evening are a silent auction, a live auction and the “Make a Pledge” campaign. Last year, guests bid on an array of impressive ballet-themed lots, including an onstage role for a child in a Hong Kong Ballet production, a tailor-made costume created by the company’s wardrobe team and even a private ballet lesson with an acclaimed dancer. There’s no better way of getting into the Christmas spirit than the art of giving—and treating yourself in return.

The Nutcracker Christmas Benefit 2019 will take place on December 1 from 11am to 2pm at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. For more information, visit hkballet.com
