Heard around Hong Kong this month

has turned its lens to revamping Hong Kong’s Southern district— rechristened Island South—the historic Jumbo floating restaurant has been donated to Ocean Park to be operated as a non-profit tourist attraction and cultural hub. The iconic building, which was opened by tycoon Stanley Ho in 1976, proved popular with all manner of celebrities and royals visiting Hong Kong, and is owned by his son Lawrence. Some found humour in a seafood restaurant being linked to a park that claims to promote marine conservation. “Does it mean that if I [see] a stingray inside the park, I can order to have it cooked at Jumbo?” one online commenter wrote. The park is said to be collecting comments from the public regarding the restaurant’s future. Maybe Ho’s sister Josie’s idea of turning the site into a nightclub could still stand a chance.
