5 Spring Jewellery Style Tips
We ask designer and businesswoman Louise Kennedy how to update our style this season
1
Embrace art deco
There’s no vintage jewellery as recognisable as pieces from the art deco period. I just love the drama, graphic shapes, fine craftsmanship and the pairing of white diamonds with coloured gemstones. It’s impactful and never goes out of fashion. Plus, from an investment perspective, it always holds its value.
2
Wear lots of pearls
Pearls are sophisticated and simple. Practical and fun, they add a touch of elegance and refinement. When accessorising, remember what Coco Chanel famously said: “A woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls.” My eponymous jewellery brand has designed a beautiful pair of pearl drop earrings called “Palma”.
3
Don’t be afraid to mix metals
I love mixing metals when designing chunky statement necklaces as it makes them more versatile. Alternatively, this spring, stack rings that are different colours, and be sure to include a couple of bands set with diamonds if you want to look super chic. But remember to choose metal colours that suit your skin tone.
4
Remember to layer
Wear multiple necklaces of varying lengths if you want to add depth and intrigue to your jewellery look. When styling bracelets, don’t be afraid to stack them and mix fine with more affordable fashion jewellery. I have a beautiful Franck Muller Long Island watch that I love to wear with my diamond-set tennis bracelets. Sometimes I’ll throw in a large aquamarine or diamond cuff.
5
Experiment with brooches
One of my most cherished possessions is a diamondencrusted half-moon brooch, which belonged to my late-mum and holds so many loving memories. Brooches look great against a chunky knit on a roll collar. So many people assume brooches are old-fashioned, but they can zhoosh up even the simplest of outfits.
