THE DINING INDUSTRY’S
pivot to restaurant-grade food deliveries during the pandemic has been nothing short of remarkable, but the mountain of waste plastic takeaway boxes, bags and cutlery created has become an unfortunate byproduct of the hospitality sector’s survival. In response, Black Sheep Restaurants is piloting Go Forever, a sustainable initiative based on a century-old lunchbox delivery and return system used in India. Customers pay a deposit, receive their delivery, wash their boxes and return them to the restaurant when a rider drops off their next order. Group founder Syed Asim Hussain says the scheme was born out of a lack of greener disposable packaging solutions. “Last year, when the only lifeboat available to us was delivery, and I was eating most of my meals out of a box, the waste associated with this became painfully apparent. This is an initiative that is particularly close to my heart as it touches on two of our core values: relentless innovation and leading with integrity.” Motorino on Mondays, Fukuro on Fridays ... we’re only doing our bit.
