The new Mercedes-benz S-class combines form and function in a luxurious saloon

-

There are saloons. There are luxury saloons. And then there is the Mercedes-benz S-class.

In the half-century since the release of the first S-class, it has evolved into a perfect blend of technology and sophistication, providing an unparalleled experience that blends ultimate comfort with the highest safety standards, crowned by supreme stylishness.

The new S-class—available as the S 450 (priced at HK$1.49 million) and S 500 (priced at HK$1.99 million)—is all about user experience. There are five large screens on board, and at the touch of a button, the optional 3D driver display provides completely realistic spatial perception of the surrounding scene. The head-up display’s augmented reality content even provides animated turn-off arrows which are virtually projected onto the road ahead. The optional S-class Interior Assist is programmed to interpret body language—for example, if the driver glances toward the rear window it will automatically open the sunblind.

A total of 250 LEDS are integrated into the driving assistance systems (optional on S 450 models) to provide a visual back-up to any warnings, while the Driving Assistance Package boasts an extensive range of new and improved functions.

Technology has been harnessed to furnish the S-class with the

greatest possible aids to comfort. The front seats are equipped with up to 19 vibration motors, and can be additionally fitted with ten different massage programmes on tap. These motors can enhance the effect of a relaxing massage by adding warmth. Air chambers have been positioned closer to the seat surface so passengers feel the benefits of the ventilation more readily. And in the rear of the car, the seats can be reconfigured to create either a rest area or a work station.

Seating throughout the S-class has been given a significant upgrade. The new generation’s front seats are considerably roomier, while to the rear there is greater legroom and headroom.

The extended adjustment range and angle of the front passenger seat gives rear passengers a more spacious seating arrangement, while the two adjustable rear seats also benefit from the optional addition of a heated cushion on the head restraint.

Safety considerations have been paramount throughout the improvement programme for the S-class. The new generation is equipped with a 360-degree parking camera as well as mechanisms to assist with blind spots and braking. To the rear, loads on the head and neck area are considerably reduced in the event of a head-on collision. Overall, the aluminium hybrid bodyshell provides a high level of safety if a crash should occur, with the added benefit of outstanding handling characteristics while also keeping noise and vibration to an absolute minimum.

At the core of the S-class’s beauty is what lies under the bonnet. A six-litre inline petrol engine with an integrated starter generator and 48-volt electrical system grant a top speed of 250 km/h and a driving experience that has no equal.
