EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
I was recently introduced to the work of Japanese artist Shoko Kanazawa at an exhibition organised by my friend Tsang Kam-sing. When I saw her original calligraphy of the character for “beauty”, I had to have it. Born with Down’s syndrome, Kanazawa began studying calligraphy aged five. Her first exhibition 15 years later was a breakout success, and she is now internationally respected as a leader in performance calligraphy.
