THE GREAT WORLD TWISTER (TV SERIES, JUNE 23)
This 14-episode series is a mixed bag of 30-minute sci-fi plots mainly in the “future technology will be bad for society” vein a la Netflix’s Black Mirror. It’s the brainchild of renowned director Ning Hao, showcasing the best of China’s younger-generation directors now in their 20s and 30s. Some episodes are slow, almost plodding: In one, a couple seek to kindle a relationship in a world where most have migrated to the metaverse. In another, Ning and renowned director Jia Zhangke make cameos playing versions of themselves—as out-of-work filmmakers in the 2060s, a time when movies have been consigned to museums. Others are inspired satire on current obsessions: One episode sees a mother turn her son’s exam scores around after developing the power to see everyone else’s scores floating above their heads, but ends up biting off more than she can chew.
