FROM THE EN­GI­NE, HAVE PUSHED CARMAKERS IN­TO WOR­KING ON ELECTRIFICATION AND HYBRIDATION. It is im­pos­si­ble to meet all these re­qui­re­ments by using the tech­no­logy of con­ven­tio­nal vehicles. On the ot­her hand, going di­rectly to po­wer­ful and pu­rely-elec­tric sys­tems en­tails a sig­ni­fi­cant in­vest­ment wit­hout ha­ving a mar­ket that is ready to go for it. The­re­fo­re, they all have to ma­ke the most of me­dium tech­no­logy, so tra­di­tio­nal trans­mis­sion chains can be progressively im­pro­ved by re­pla­cing the al­ter­na­tor with a 48 V re­ver­si­ble elec­tric ma­chi­ne. Un­li­ke clas­sic hy­brid cars, 48 V mo­dels do not carry an elec­tric en­gi­ne, but the ther­mal en­gi­ne is sup­por­ted by the start-ge­ne­ra­tor en­gi­ne.
