The orchids paradise
The Soroa Orchid, as it is commonly known, with an area of 35,000 m2 houses the largest orchid collection in all of Cuba. It has 130 species of orchids Cuban natives and a total of about 700 species from other parts of the world. This place, located in a small valley next to the Manantiales River in the municipality of Candelaria, is located in the boundaries of the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve. The creation of the garden goes back to the year 1943 by the Canarian lawyer Tomás Felipe Camacho, member of the Cuban Orchid Society affiliated with the American Orchid Society and the Eastern Orchid Congress. Initially called Rancho Pilila on the fertile hill on which it is located the garden, Doctor Camacho devoted all his attention to the cultivation of flowers and especially Orchids. Since 1982 the laboratory "Orquideario Soroa" was set up in the garden with the aim of study and promote the specialized cultivation of orchids in the country, creating the conditions suitable for converting the orchid garden into an Investigative and Cultural Scientific Center for enjoy domestic and foreign tourists. Nestled in a paradisiacal environment is the main attraction of the Soroa tourist destination complemented by the wonderful Soroa jump and the landscape of the Candelaria Valley. It is listed as one of the favorite sites by tourism specialized nature in Cuba.
