We’d be happy to offer our services

-

THROUGHOUT much of the world the catering and leisure industry and many others professions are supported and aided by part-time workers. Here in North Cyprus parttime workers do not seem to be encouraged or allowed without penalty. One of the major industries in North Cyprus is catering and leisure.

As we have raging inflation and pretty well all property transactions appear to be carried out in sterling one has to feel for Cypriot families; for example, a working man getting back from work in the evening can look after the children while his wife can pop off to work a few hours in the evening, the family budget is greatly enhanced and the pressure of making ends meets is eased. There is so much people can do and offer on a part-time basis, restaurant and bar work, book-keeping, office work — the list goes on.

Looking at the problem from the other side, there are so many companies, small, medium and even large ones which can benefit from employing part-timers; efficiency, profitability, professionalism can all be enhanced.

From a government point of view the economy becomes more dynamic and strong, taxation revenue will increase and the black economy can look less attractive; business competition and personal freedom will add to the cut and thrust of the country.

Looking just a little wider at opportunities there are a large number of retired people here from different parts of the world who have a wealth of experience. They would be happy to offer their services on a part-time basis in return for a little remuneration.

We have an election just around the corner: is it possible for some of our candidates to pick up this cudgel and run with it? Can the British Residents Society and Anglo Turkish Association, for example, help by raising the question in appropriate places?

One has to feel for the Cypriots and all people who are here working on fixed incomes, dreading the inevitable price increases without any way of fighting a decrease in living standards.
