CRITICS were divided about this reworking of a Shakespeare classic as a modern psychological thriller. Has someone taken unwanted liberties with the most watched play in the English language?

Experimental movie-maker Michael Almereyda compromised in 2000. He transferred murder and intrigue in a mediaeval Danish court to a struggle for power in a modern business empire in Manhattan.

One leading critic complained that Hamlet was reduced to a “wet, whining wannabe”. Perhaps that is fair comment. The tragedy of the prince of Denmark was always that he was not a man of action, but a thoughtful individual whose responses were understandably indecisive. Judge for yourself.

The plot transfers smoothly from Elsinore to New York. Hamlet, alias Ethan Hawke, is told by a vision of his dead father that he was murdered by his brother Claudius, alias Kyle MacLachlan.

Radio Times was positive: “Radical re-interpretations don’t always come off, but Almereyda’s marriage of 16th century words and 21st century visuals works well. So, too, does the reinvention of Elsinore as a dodgy multinational corporation.”
