A top neurosurgeon’s hands are mangled in a car crash as he texts at the wheel. To remake his life, he travels to Kathmandu and studies occult realities with the Ancient One, a shaven headed monk played by Tilda Swinton. He shows great aptitude and becomes one of the world’s leading sorcerers.
Doctor Strange is Brit Benedict Cumberbatch, who adds a New York accent to the intellectual arrogance of his Sherlock Holmes portrayals on television.
Strange’s induction into cosmic realities is as visually surreal as any such sequences ever screened. As a sorcerer, he must combat the powers of evil Kaecilius, another compelling performance by charismatic Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen whose ambition is to lead the world into the realm of Hell. Strange’s understandably bemused girlfriend is played by Rachel McAdams. Way out direction by Scott Derrickson from a script by Jon Spaihts. Radio Times said: “Absolutely terrific.
