Hard-bitten police chief William Parker, alias Nick Nolte, is determined to bring down mob boss Mickey Cohen. Sean Penn is splendidly over-the-top as this violent gangster who keeps judges and cops in his back pocket and plans to take over the rackets in California.
Parker sets up an elite squad of tough cops under square-jawed army hero Josh Brolin to defeat Mickey by fair means or foul. It’s The Untouchables, switched from Chicago to LA, with Nolte as Eliot Ness and Mickey Cohen standing in for Al Capone.
Nolte’s team includes resourceful Ryan Gosling who makes dangerous whoopee with Cohen’s slinky girlfriend Emma Stone. Cop Michael Pena is a sparky double act with moustachioed sharpshooter Robert Patrick, while Giovanni Ribisi is a nerdy surveillance expert.
Ruben Fleischer directed in 2013 from a script based on a novel by Paul Lieberman. Radio Times said: “Director Fleischer flamboyantly blends staged violence with dark humour in a glossy Los Angeles. This thriller is definitely more brawn than brains, but hits the mark with relish.”
