Jim plays a headbanger illusionist who triumphs over his theatrical rival, a conventional stage magician. A mix of lunatic comedy and schmaltz. Worth a look.
Carrey is frequently hilarious as Steve Gray, a long-haired, tattooed and spangled, masochistic performance artist. He hammers nails into blocks of wood with his forehead. Ouch!
Steve Carell plays rival stage magician Burt Wonderstone, a sexist blowhard who works with long-term stage partner Anton, alias Steve Buscemi. Joe Public has seen acts like this before and casino boss James Gandolfini tells Burt it’s time to move on.
Wonderstone is reduced to performing in supermarkets and retirement homes, where he meets legendary old magician Alan Arkin, who has a few tricks up his sleeve and gives Burt hope for a comeback.
Critic Roger Ebert called it: “One dark and wickedly funny comedy. Carrey reaches deep into the trick bag that turned him into a star some 20 years ago. He made me laugh more than any comedic character in recent memory. Welcome back, hilarious Jim Carrey!”
