Grim reality seen through the dream-world eyes of a child.
From a trailer camp at Bathtub, on the fringe of civilisation, little Hushpuppy and her dad Wink struggle through the rising waters. She sees the spirit of her dead mother and has visions of prehistoric monsters and melting icecaps. A delightful insight.
An unsentimental tale of life, love and loss among the floodwaters. Hushpuppy guides us through scenes of fireworks, music and dancing. These people do not have much, but their world is complete in itself — subject to the weather and the realities of climate change.
Hushpuppy is winningly played by Quvenzhane Wallis and Dwight Henry convinces as her loving pa. In 2012, the critics applauded this allegory by first-time director Benh Zeitlin based on Lucy Alibar’s one act play Juicy and Delicious. Radio Times said: “This marvellous bayou fable juggles elements of magical fantasy with hard-bitten poverty-line realism. Grips and ultimately enchants.”
