They advise you to suspend disbelief and enjoy a comedy of identity aimed at adults as well as kids.

Will Ferrell somehow convinces as Buddy, in coloured tights and a pointy hat, who talks strangely and thinks he’s an elf. The rational explanation is that the infant Buddy had crawled into Santa’s sack and thereby hitched a ride to Fairyland. So there!

Buddy was raised by elves, who are benevolent dwarves with a high work ethic. In New York, his dad is grumpy publisher Walter, alias James Caan in full Scrooge mode. He thinks the kid is nuts.

His new mom is charmingly played by Mary Steenburgen and he has a touch of romance with Jovie, a fetching shop assistant played by Zooey Deschanel. As Buddy’s elfin stepdad, comedian Bob Newhart delivers an amusing commentary. Directed by Jon Favreau from a screenplay by David Berenbaum.

Radio Times said: “Despite modern special effects trickery, this strives for the feel of vintage Disney. Ferrell is the life and soul of an infectiously entertaining Christmas celebration.”
