IF YOU still hum jukebox hits from the ‘60s, tune in your deaf aid and enjoy. A big screen version of a hit Broadway musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons pop group.

Veteran director Clint Eastwood lovingly reprised their soaring harmonies in 2014, featuring hits like Sherry, Oh, What a Night and Big Girls Don’t Cry. As lead singer Frankie Valli, John Lloyd Young repeated his Broadway success.

It was a rags-to-riches ride for four streetwise New Jersey lads who once contemplated a life of crime. They were helped on their way by a local mob boss, who spotted their musical talents. Gyp DeCarlo, alias Christopher Walken, runs away with the acting honours.

Actor Joe Pesci was a real life friend and introduced the boys to their pianist Tommy DeVito, alias Vincent Piazza. Songwriter Bob Gaudio is played by Erich Bergen.

Some critics felt Eastwood’s approach did not sufficiently explore the tensions that led to the group’s eventual break-up.

Radio Times said: “Eastwood neatly follows the beats of the show and that makes for solid entertainment. His rough-and-ready style aptly reflects his young subjects, who are brimming with roguish charm.”
