CA POLLING day of mixed fortunes saw six of the eight political parties contesting Sunday’s general election take seats in the new Assembly — which will have 21 fresh faces after only 29 MPs were reelected.

The National Unity Party (UBP) emerged victorious by a wide margin, increasing their share of the vote and their presence in the 50-seat parliament from 18 to 21, but remain unable to form a government alone.

The result left commentators considering various coalition permutations, with or without UBP — and the prospect of a fresh election in June.

UBP’s former coalition partners, the Democrat Party ( DP) saw their seats reduced from four to three.

The main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) — the biggest single political bloc after the last general election in 2013 — was one of the biggest party losers, crashing from 20 seats to 12 as its share of the vote slumped from 38 per cent at 2013’s general election to just 21 per cent.

Two new parties enter the Assembly for the first time after making their general election debut, the People’s Party (HP) taking 12 seats and Rebirth Party (YDP) two, but there was disappointment in some quarters over their showing.

Social Democratic Party (TDP) leader Cemal Özyiğit also voiced unhappiness, although his party increased its seats from two to three.

There was upset, too, for other parties, with Communal Liberation Party (TKP-YG) leader and long-term MP Mehmet Çakıcı, who split from TDP last year to revive the party and had kept his seat as an independent, considering his future after TKP failed to secure a seat in its electoral alliance with the United Cyprus Party (BKP).

The Nationalist Democracy Party (MDP), representing Turkish nationalists in the TRNC, also failed to pass the threshold to enter parliament at its first election.
