BEGUILING off-screen shenanigans as Hollywood sex bomb Marilyn Monroe acted alongside Brit stage star Laurence Olivier. A treat for movie buffs who enjoy celebrity gossip.
Showbiz was startled in 1956 when Olivier directed and starred in Terence Rattigan’s ThePrinceandthe Showgirl with Marilyn as co-star. Monroe was a movie star who wanted to be a serious actress and Olivier was a serious actor wanting to be a movie star. Sparks were inevitable.
Their relationship is seen through the eyes of studio go-between Colin Clark, alias Eddie Redmayne. Marilyn was a spontaneous actress who was also an off-screen sexpot and little girl lost.
Michelle Williams is terrific as Marilyn and Kenneth Branagh is a standout as Olivier, ever ready with scathing one-liners as Marilyn tested everyone’s patience. Both stars were Oscar nominated. Judi Dench plays fussy Dame Sybil Thorndike and Julia Ormond is Olivier’s wife Vivien Leigh.
Simon Curtis directed in 2011 from a script by Adrian Hodges based on the diaries of Colin Clark.
Empire magazine said: “At moments hilarious and others touching, it’s a sweet, slight affair, more pretty pageant than pithy biographical drama.”
