WAR as face-to-face combat has nothing to do with death by drone strike.

The target is an image on a television monitor thousands of miles from the battlefield and death is delivered by remote control from an unmanned missile. Consider the dilemma faced by Colonel Katherine Powell, played by Helen Mirren in 2015.

From her bunker in the English countryside, she has wanted terrorists within her sights. They are in a house in Kenya but before she can destroy them, a child selling bread appears on a street corner within the kill zone. Should the strike be delayed to protect an innocent? When does war become murder?

Ultimately, the decision falls to General Frank Benson, alias Alan Rickman, another effortlessly nuanced performance in his last screen role before his untimely death. This soldier understands the battlefield implications of his judgment.

Gavin Hood directs from a screenplay by Guy Hibbert that lets nobody off the hook including the audience.
