Weapons found in car, home of shooting victim

-

A MAN who survived being shot in the head during an attempted “honour killing” in Lapta five years ago was in court this week after guns and ammunition were found in his car and home.

Hasan Kuloğlu was arrested last Friday after his car was stopped during a routine check in Girne at around 11am.

Police found a gun in the vehicle and then searched his Lapta home, where they found another firearm concealed in a wall and three bullets, Girne District Court was told last Saturday.

Kuloğlu told the court that the gun at his address had been given to him by Yunus Emre Menekşe, who was also arrested.

Menekşe told police that he had found the weapon on the Lapta coast “hidden among the rocks” and that he had given it to Kuloğlu after hiding it for a week because he was “afraid that he would get in trouble”.

Kuloğlu was released on bail following a second appearance before Girne District Court on Tuesday, while Menekşe was remanded in custody after failing to meet bail of 200,000TL and a surety of 150,000TL. The court was told that the police investigation into the case had been completed. Brothers Umut Taş and Mehmet Sait Taş were sentenced to 20 and 15 years respectively for shooting Kuloğlu in the head on February 8, 2013 and killing his 50-year-old father Bekir, who had tried to intervene.

They had set out to kill former family friend Kuloğlu after he had allegedly become “too friendly” with Mehmet Taş’s Moldovan wife.
