Cyprus Today

Is this man a qualified journalist?

-

I TAKE great offence at the remark made by your columnist Rev Walker (Cyprus Today, December 23) and it begs me to ask the question: is he really a man of the cloth and a qualified journalist?

His outburst regarding the forthcoming Old Firm match was reprehensible when he belittled the world-famous Glasgow Rangers. Describing one of the founding members of the Football Association as a “mob” is totally unacceptable.

All credit to Glasgow Celtic with their amazing run of results, but surely a wise man would also have given credit to Hearts for their outstanding performance, a result no-one would have predicted?

For the benefit of this pundit and to his eternal shame, the definition of the world “mob” is: a large crowd of people, especially one that is disorderly and intent on causing trouble or violence.

Didn’t a portion of the mob who support his obvious favoured club bring shame to them as they couldn’t show respect during a minute’s silence on the match day nearest Armistice Day? Don’t they prefer to sing IRA rebel songs and glorify the bombing of British towns and the murders of British servicemen, not only in the UK but in Cyprus too?

Glasgow Rangers are proud to have a portrait of Her Majesty grace a wall in our stadium and fully support our armed forces.

It’s a fact that the directors of both Old Firm clubs are shamed by a section of both their supporters who sing sectarian songs.

I am proud to be a blue-nose and hand on heart can say I have never been disorderly or been to a match to cause trouble or violence, and indeed distanced myself from the Old Firm matches for years. Name and address supplied
