Well done for such a wonderful event

-

LAST Saturday night we witnessed an extraordinary event for this small country at the Denktaş Culture Centre in Gazimağusa. It was an evening of classical music performed by the Presidential Symphony Orchestra of North Cyprus. We didn’t even know they had one!

Not only that but the conductor was the world-renowned Stanley Dodds and the guest violinist was the equally renowned Kristine Balanas, playing her violin made in 1787.

These internationally known musicians actually playing in North Cyprus and for free!

Our German friends said an evening like this would cost a fortune in Germany — or in the UK, for that matter.

Sadly we were the only English people there, which was a pity since we have grown up with this kind of music which is fairly uncommon here.

Well done Gazimağusa Belediyesi for bringing such wonderful music to our corner of the island and maybe next time, should there be one, better advertising would elicit a bigger expat audience.

From an old Bluesman, this was indeed a wonderful musical experience. John and Barbara Grundey, Boğaz, İskele

Editor’s note: We’ve written about the Presidential Symphony Orchestra several times since its launch early in 2016, and will keep readers informed of their newest concert plans. For more on their performance, turn to Leisure page 3.
