A TEAR-jerker about a lad’s search for his beloved horse through the battlefields of the First World War. This box office hit in 2011 cost $66 million to make and banked $178 million.
Director Steven Spielberg brought Michael Morpurgo’s sentimental novel to pulsating life.
In Devon at the start of the 20th century, a boozy small farmer buys a stallion unsuited to pulling a plough. They will lose their land unless a stony field can be turned over.
Son Jeremy Irvine names the horse Joey, teaches it to plough, saves the farm and a special bond is forged.
In the First World War, Joey is conscripted into the cavalry and goes off to France. A Thomas Hardy tale of rural folk becomes the equine equivalent of Saving Private Ryan. Joey’s cavalryman is killed and the horse is captured by Germans and used to pull heavy guns.
Joey becomes lost and terrified in the nightmare of trench warfare.
Jeremy Irvine joins the army and seeks Joey in France. Both are wounded but eventually reunited. Hurrah!
