THIS recent, much-hyped musical won six Oscars at the 2017 Academy Awards. A love story punctuated by foottapping song and dance routines that reminded some critics of Gene Kelly’s joyous Singin’ in the Rain.

Ambitious jazz pianist Seb, alias Ryan Gosling, and wannabe actress Mia, played by Emma Stone, fall in love, before they are separated when Seb’s career takes him on tour. Can they keep their passion alive?

The opening scene sets the tone. Traffic is gridlocked in Los Angeles, drivers are swearing and shaking fists, until someone starts singing and suddenly everyone is dancing on top of their cars. Seb and Mia visit the Griffith Observatory and literally seem to dance among the stars.

Sounds a touch corny, but critics say this romantic musical is not to be missed. Thirty-eight-year-old Damien Chazelle became the youngest ever winner of the Oscar for Best Director. Emma Stone was voted Best Actress and other Oscars were for Musical Score, Best Song, Cinematography and Production Design.

Empire magazine called it: “Audacious, retro, funny and heartfelt. It is the latest great musical for people who don’t like musicals — and will slap a mile-wide smile across the most miserable of faces.”
