Lucky Number Slevin 8.30pm beIN Movies Action
A LAIDBACK thriller about a resourceful guy caught in the middle of a New York mob war. If you dig zingy oneliners, double-crosses aplenty and stylised violence, this is right up your dark alley.
Josh Hartnett is Slevin, staying in the apartment of a friend who has big gambling debts with rival gangsters. He is mistaken for his pal, by the “Boss”, alias Morgan Freeman, who will forgive all if he rubs out the son of rival crime lord, Schlomo the Rabbi, alias Ben Kingsley. Josh also meets Schlomo, who just wants his 30 grand back.
A word to the wise. This mistaken identity stuff ain’t quite as straightforward as it seems. Flitting about in the background is a mysterious hitman, known as “Goodkat”, alias Bruce Willis, who does jobs for both mobsters.
The scene stealer is neighbour Lucy Liu, who knocks on Josh’s door to ask for a cup of sugar and more. Good fun but a touch over-complicated.
Paul McGuigan directed in 2006 from a script by Jason Smilovic.
Total Film said: “Dark and comic, sharply written and acted, this entertaining thriller is a neat leftfield spin on a derivative genre.”
