The Godfather 4.40pm beIN Movies Stars
ANOTHER chance to see this violent and compelling saga of a New York Mafia family in the ‘40s is a classic always worth another visit.
In 1972, director Francis Ford Coppola collected Oscars for Best Picture and Screenplay for his adaptation of a bestselling novel by Mario Puzo.
As Don Corleone, dead-eyed patriarch of the mobster clan, Marlon Brando, mumbling through padded cheeks, got the Oscar for Best Actor. His masterclass performance confirmed him as arguably the greatest movie actor of the 20th century.
Typically, Brando sent a fake Indian girl to the Academy Awards to decline his Oscar. He was protesting at Hollywood’s stereotyping of North American Indians.
The Godfather made stars out of Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall and James Caan. If the movie glamourised criminals, it was also unforgettable entertainment.
Godfather Part II, won even more Oscars and is perhaps the best movie ever. Watch it on this channel one week from today at 4.15pm.
The Guide To 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die called tonight’s movie: “A pulp fiction gangster opera, an epic of patriarchy, family, and of America itself. Coppola’s audacious, visceral, and stately set pieces are legend.”
