Dennis The Menace 4.30pm beIN Movies Family

YOU’LL laugh out loud somewhere in this low-brow comedy. Give your critical faculties the night off and enjoy Walter Matthau.

The lugubrious Matthau gets plenty of laughs as a long-suffering old-timer at the receiving end of the misguided initiatives of the nightmare kid from next door. Angelic-looking Mason Gamble plays five-year-old Dennis who unwittingly tormented his neighbour, Mr Wilson in a well-known American strip cartoon by Hank Ketcham. Not to be confused with Dennis the Menace in the Beano, although there are obvious similarities.

The slapstick fun intensifies when Dennis’s parents go on a trip and persuade Wilson and his wife, endearingly played by Joan Plowright, to look after Dennis. The kid’s accident-prone antics have already inspired Wilson with a desire to strangle the little devil. Wilson usually pretends to be asleep when Dennis is in the offing.

Directed by Nick Castle in 1993 from a script by John Hughes with echoes of his Home Alone, a comedy about a small boy under threat from bad guys. Dennis easily fends off the attentions of nasty Switchblade Sam, alias Christopher Lloyd.

Radio Times called the movie: “Often very funny, but just as often painfully poor. Walter Matthau is brilliant as the long-suffering victim.”
