EU political figures condemn Afrika attack
EUROPEAN political figures took to Twitter to condemn the attack on Afrika.
European Parliament president Antonio Tajani stated: “I strongly condemn the attacks against Turkish Cypriot newspaper, Afrika . . . Intimidating journalists is unacceptable. The European Parliament will always defend media freedom, the cornerstone of democracy.”
Greek Cypriot MEP and vice-chair of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, Takis Hadjigeorgiou, called on Mr Tajani to “protect” the newspaper and its editor-in-chief, Şener Levent.
In a letter to Mr Tajani, which he shared on social media, Mr Hadjigeorgiou expressed his “deepest concerns about this new lynching campaign”.
He continued: “They are attacks on all efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. They are attacks on our vision for a united Cyprus.”
The demonstration against Afrika newspaper received global press coverage in media outlets such as the New York Times, Fox News Channel, the Hindu, Malaysia’s Sun Daily, Kathimerini, and the Washington Post, which ran the headline: “Editor: Erdoğan Urged Attack on Turkish Cypriot Newspaper”.
The stories have also been shared on Twitter by organisations such the Stockholm Centre for Freedom and the Houston Communist Party.
