‘Angels’ fly high

NEAR East University’s “Angels” cemented their place at the top of Group B in the women’s European basketball league, with a 76-65 win over tital rivals Fenerbahçe in İstanbul on Wednesday.

The table-topping clash saw the NEU defending champions extend their points total to 24, one ahead of second-placed UMMC Ekaterinburg and two ahead of Fenerbahçe, who slipped one place to third.

NEU dominated in three of Wednesday’s four quarters, Kayla McBride top-scoring for them with 17 points.

The last round of matches before the competition enters its quarter-final stages will see NEU “host” Russian side Nadezhda for a “home” tie in İstanbul on Wednesday.

The Turkish Cypriots are barred from playing their matches in North Cyprus and are officially registered as a Turkish club after complaints by Greek Cypriot authorities to the sport’s governing body, Fiba.
